Group: Reflection on Brighton

I feel this trip helped us in many ways, not only because it gave us fresh ideas but because it also helped us realise what simply wasn't possible.

LOCATION:
I feel like this is a good location to use for several reasons including
  • Aesthetically pleasing and fitting to our wider narrative with several graffiti ridden and derelict places.
  • Easy to access and get to - fairly practical due to several modes of transport that could get us there: parents/friends in car, a bus, a train, a coach.
  • There is a wide range of filming locations within a close proximity of each other - beach front, alleys, derelict buildings, lively city spots.
  • No fundamental issues with filming rights.
  • It helped us improve our time management and efficiency in filming and also in prioritising concepts or ideas - as time constraints or practicality issues may mean you cannot film everything you want in one sitting: and so we cut an idea of filming at the skate park as the logistics meant it would be impossible to sufficiently film there and make it back to the rendez-vous on time.
ISSUES:
  • It is quite hard to get members of the public to do what you want - whether it is act normally or stay out of shot they always seem to do the opposite. This is not only fairly irritating but quite impractical in the sense that continuity is risked and the shot will have to be done again - making the whole process more time consuming. This is not an issue with Brighton alone: this would occur in any busy public place.
  • I also feel that Brighton is a location at which success is fairly weather dependent due to most filming locations being outside. Whilst we could film in windy/rainy conditions, I feel that this would take away from the overall professional look of the product.
  • In filming we focused mainly on lip syncing, and whilst this helped us to perfect the skills needed to film important performance based shots, in editing I think we realised there needs to be a lot more happening in the sense a video with an entirety of lip syncing seems a little lackluster.
  • Moreover, I think that we need more content generally and need to ensure there is a wider range of shots and material; although this may have been more due to time constraints, and that in the time provided we did in fact get a good range of shots in different locations.
  • We were not able to identify who had the track equipment and so had to film it freehand - this was innovative and helped improve thinking on our feet and improvisational skills, however upon reviewing the footage it is a little shaky and looks slightly unprofessional
  • Wind - we had filmed a production log here but on reviewing footage it is difficult to understand what is being said due to wind blowing in the microphone.
