Group: Further Location Recce of Inside House

These are pictures of all of the relevant rooms in Billy's house. This will be the setting of both the first and second lines of action - exploring the characters of Rachel and Marcus; however this will not evidently be the same location as we want to avoid suggesting that they live in the same place, and so when we shoot in one room or corridor we can only include it within one narrative line. In regards to this, the character of Rachel, we will shoot almost exclusively in the girl's bedroom (displayed in the second picture) and for Marcus almost exclusively downstairs. We also display a kitchen upstairs and - whilst we don't intend on using this for much content - this is a good space to perhaps show Marcus' situation and an ideal place for the character to put down his shopping. The male bedroom is where we will film ECUs of our character preparing to rob a bank - in dressing all in black, putting gloves on, putting a balaclava on etc. For Rachel, we have done some test shots in regards to framing the opening action - where Rachel is seen sitting on her bed in a depressed frame of mind, whilst our artist lip syncs her introduction: these can be seen above.

Group: Casting

The character of Rachel will be played by JD Ward:

The character of Marcus will be played by William "BJ" Jones:

Our final two characters - the young boy and his mother - will be played by Harry Francis and his mother, Christy Francis:

On top of this we have our band members for the performance actor: the main is Luca himself - due to knowledge of lyrics and ability to lip sync, but also due to the fact he can have an input on framing and how the action goes from the other side of the camera; and then for choruses Ross Galloway will be involved as almost a backing member - as there is more than one person in our band:

(NOTE: the last four were taken in an idealistic costume, how ever we feel the first two - Billy and JD - may need to have alterations to their costumes in order to better suit our concept)

Group: Animatic

Here is our finished animatic, we appreciate in some bits it is a little brief due to the complexity of our intercutting, and also the expression that can only be captured by a camera with our actors, however it fundamentally shows our concept and puts our ideas onto paper for filming.

LB: Challenges

Challenges –

  • One challenge we face is trying to get no one in shot while we are filming in a busy location, for example in the housing estate. We are trying to get a sense of isolation in the video, as we want our star to appear as if he is detached from society. I think the best way to overcome this issue is to choose an appropriate time of the day to film, for example midday while everyone is at school or work.

  • Another challenge we have is working with animals, as in the last verse when the young boy storms out the house and roams the streets at night walking his dog. This shouldn’t be a huge problem to overcome as we are only filming the dog on the lead walking, however we are going to need the dog to remain calm and settled while we take different shots. We will be using Harry’s Alaskan Marmaduke, and as Harry will be present on set he can control his dog to ensure she can do what we need her to do.

  • Last of all, in the scene when the boy is roaming the streets, skiving school, there will be intercutting shots of him doing graffiti. To get around the legal issues of doing graffiti, we are going to Stockwell Park estate, which has an abandoned basketball court on the estate, which is now a designated area for graffiti.

Group: Treatment

Treatment –

The Hawk House song we have chosen has a basic structure of verse chorus verse chorus verse chorus. Each verse of the song describes the life of a new character. We will produce and structure our music video in this form as well. The first verse is about a young teenage girl called Rachel who has a rough upbringing, gets into drugs and is abuse by her boyfriend. In the music video will show snippets of Rachel daily routines of her doing drugs in toilet and coming home with fresh bruises from her boyfriend. This will take place in the two locations Rachel’s room and the toilet cubical. The second verse describe the life of a new character called Marcius, who is a father r of two young kids. We discover Marcus is having money problems and is suffering from depression because his wife has filed for divorce. Marcus’ solution to this problem is too rob a bank and try to gain a quick bit of money. Marcus is unsuccessful in robbery and is sentenced to 10 years in prison. Similarly to first story, we will show snippets of Marcus struggling with his different problems, for example showing shots of Marcus getting loads of bills or a shot of the bail lifts storming the door. We will also give the impression that Marcus does rob a bank and getting caught by the police. The last verse describes the life of a young teenage boy, who is unnamed. He is not performing well at school and is getting into trouble, wasting his days, smoking weed in his room. The cause of the young boy behaviour is due to the fact that his father is not around and his mum is addicted to her prescription medication, meaning he has no restrictions from his parents, allowing him to live his life off-rails. We will show shots of both the boy, getting bad grades, having arguments with his mum, walking out the house and roaming the streets at night with his dog, and the mother, taking extensive amounts of her medication and neglecting her son.

We will present each story individually and have our star, as a narrator, who will be present in all the shots throughout. The star will be lip-syncing the words of the song as he presents each character. He will be present in the scene however the star will never interact with the character of the story, it will be as If he wasn’t there. For the chorus, which stays the same throughout, we will cut to the stars performing in a different location just so this allows us a good means to link each verse together.

The final shot will be will the money shot, which highlights the twist in the narrative and will make all the individual stories link together. The final shot will be a zoom into a cracked picture frame which has a family photo of all the characters (Rachel, Marcus and the mum and son) siting together. This will indicate to the audience that all the characters are from the same family, Rachel being the sister to both Marcus and the son and the mum being the mother of the three characters. Marcus being the eldest sibling as he already has kids.

Group: Track Lyrics

Hawk House - Save It For Another Day (LYRICS)

yo
cool story
couple of stories
yeah
cool
ah
Rachel
young girl
never knew love
never seems further away
while further she strays
from the murderous ways of her mind
yo, she gives us the goods
like she's serving a plate
but a servant a slave to the guys
and she's certainly swaded by the lies
that they tell
by the pain in hers eyes
you could tell
that she never knew true love
but she's perfectly strange
believing a person could change if you love them enough
so she turns to the boys who are burning with lust
like it could every turn into love
but she returns to the rough reality
and realises the hurt that it does
yo, she's 16 like the verse that I spray
and worth all the weight
of gold in the world
never learnt how to pray
and her purpose is grey
great, another queen with no date
another being filled with hate

but i'll save it for another day
day
day
day
day
yo

but i'll save it for another day
day
day
day
day

yo, Marcus
a father of two
harder to prove yourself
when partly removed
from reality
and now he piles all these thoughts
ever since she filed for divorce
living life as a corpse
work in the day
and in night its the chores
ain't got a choice cause his youngest is 4
and bail lifts storming the door
(banging)
ah, so he decides to resort to the violence
but he's never been that violent before
he draws for the four
rolls up in the bank
and tells everyone to fall to the floor
ah
but of course he was caught
and brought forth to the court
and forced to a course to ten years
according to laws
of course
another king with no sword
another man filled with shame

but i'll save it for another day
day
day
day
day
day
yo

but i'll save it for another day
day
day
day
day
day
ah, my zill is persistent
but some guys still slip in the system
cos silver smithing
underneath the brief
the grief it causes when the still it glistens
and it fits the norm
the lift is paused
cause his face fits descriptions
of police profiles
a young man goes wild
with a sick affliction
while his mum sips prescriptions
its a quick addiction
quick to lead to death
best to not think its fiction
fifteen but he's fixed on causing friction
the cause is missing fathers
with no distinction
between right and wrong
he lights a bong
and fades away
and lays the cabe
like he made his grave
he can't make the grades at high school
so he plays away
and its safe to say
I was once like him
 writing bars
wishing for amazing grace
and it gets me mad
damn
another prince with no dad
another boy filled with blame
but i'll save it for another day
day
day
day
day
yo

but i'll save it for another day
day
day
day
day

Group: Pitch

Here is the visual presentation that accompanied our pitch.

After our pitch we hosted a Q&A session of sorts - providing our audience an opportunity to raise any issues in our concept that they may see, and also an opportunity for them to comment on which aspects they like; which allowed us to adapt our concept to avoid these issues, clarify and consolidate it, and also see where our strengths lie.

STRENGTHS:
  • We found our audience thought that our concept was generally very clear, with a fundamental well thought out narrative and digipak - which is original and has an easily deconstructable message.
  • We were told our pitch in itself was very clear and well thought out - presented strongly.
  • Our locations were identified as very suitable for our concept.
  • Font for our print work is very clean and suits band image as showcased by us.

CHANGES/CHALLENGES IN OUR CONCEPT:
  • Some shots may be very hard to achieve - and so we will try them out before hand to see if they are attainable: leaving us time to think of another if they aren't.
  • Similarly, we will edit some of our Brighton footage with a colour drain and a black and white filter and then audience test - to see which aesthetically suits our piece more. This is because we mentioned colour draining as our ideal edit, but it was suggested B+W may be superior.
  • Our logistics planning will need to be very thorough, as we will need a lot of content to maintain a high cutting rate throughout our whole video.
  • Following on from the last point, we are filming in several locations and so we will need to transport all relevant equipment and cast to these - perhaps easier said than done.

Group: Progression from AS

How will we demonstrate progression from our AS pitch to our A2 pitch?
  • We have a deeper understanding of symbolism and connotations, and so can explore this further - with less necessity for a literal meaning behind our action.
  • Our skills both in front of and behind the camera have improved, which means we can be more audacious in terms of including more challenging shots to achieve technical excellence.
  • We have more of an idea of our locations and so we can execute more apt reccies and can analyse them for more ideas relevant to our concept.
  • Our presentation skills have ameliorated and so the pitch will seem more coherent and oiled in terms of what is being said and what is happening on the board to reinforce our concept - both visually and audibly.
  • We have a clear casting objective - whereas last time we just knew that we had a certain character that we wanted someone to fit, this time we have particular people on board who have initially complied enthusiastically; although some of this will need to be fully confirmed in the practicality sense that they need to be available for multiple shoots in potentially multiple locations.

How will we create a cohesive band image across 3 products?

  • In maintaining a very similar style of attire and aesthetic look to our character throughout all three we will create a certain aspect of an artist's meta narrative.
  • We will also ensure the colour scheme as a whole is fairly similar as to create an alike look and general feel to our work - although this will be a more prominent feature to maintain in print work as opposed to completely limiting our location opportunities for filming the video for example; however it is likely we will edit the footage somewhat to provide a grittier and darker feel to it.
  • Another aspect we can keep uniform is typography and style of font throughout all three products - this will give it a similar look and feel across the products.
